Charlie Lucas Tomorrow!

Here's the last of our little video clips of Alabama's Tin Man, Charlie Lucas. We call this one I tried to run away from it, because I thought it was a curse.

Charlie will be here TOMORROW, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12 FROM 4 PM - 5:30 PM to sign copies of Tin Man, the beautiful new book about Charlie and his art. Also joining Charlie will be the author of the book, Ben Windham, and the photographer, Chip Cooper. That's three heavyweights for the price of one!

Hope you'll be here....but if not you know we'll be glad to get books signed for you by all 3 men....just call us at 334-265-1473, or EMAIL US. ($49.95 hardcover)

PS A pretty nice Christmas present for anyone on your list who has any of Charlie's work.

The Capitol Book Newsletter
Monday, November 2, 2009

Our next event is a booksigning on Thursday, November 12, when Ben Windham and Chip Cooper will be here to sign copies of Tin Man, their beautiful new book about self-taught Alabama artist Charlie Lucas. The book is just wonderful. ($49.95 hardcover)

Oh, and Charlie Lucas will be here, too!

We'll be sending out a series of video clips about Charlie so that those who don't know him can learn a little about him.....while all of Charlie's friends and admirers can just sit back and enjoy hearing Charlie talk about himself and his art.

The first clip we call I asked God to give me a talent that no one had.... it's from an interview of Charlie by Tommy Morehead at a Folkarts Festival in Talladega in 2002.

(Charlie, Ben and Chip will be at the store on Thursday, November 12 from 4  - 5:30 PM.)

And by the way, Tommy Morehead has lots of great Alabama arts stuff on YouTube....you can visit his page HERE.

Two Events This Week!

So much going on even we can hardly keep up.

1. TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28 FROM 4 PM - 5:30

Lisa Patton, author of "Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter" will be here at the store TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28 FROM 4 PM - 5:30. Lisa is a Memphis native who spent her college years in Tuscaloosa (and has lots of friends in Montgomery.) Then she really did move to Vermont to run an Inn before returning to the South and writing this novel. It is a charming fish-out-of-water tale of one woman who learns to stand up for herself -in sandals and snow boots- against the odds.

Our favorite review of her book is this one, from one of our favorite writers, Lee Smith:

"Just when you think there's nothing new under the sun, her it comes-the North/South split as seen from a brand-new perspective. I absolutely devoured this yummy novel, all in one sitting."

Funny, moving, page-turnable. We think Lisa is the next big thing!

If you would like a signed copy but can't be here Wednesday, just let us know we'll take care of it for you. ($23.99 hardcover)

Note: we almost couldn't get the books for this event, because it's proven to be such an unexpected success that the publisher sold out and had to have more copies printed...it's that good!

2. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 AT 7 PM....AT HUNTINGDON COLLEGE

RICK BRAGG AND SONNY BREWER!

Two old friends - of each other, and of us, and of you - will be at Flowers Hall at Huntingdon College THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 AT 7 PM. They'll read from their new books, fool around a little, take questions, and then sign copies of all their books, old and new. Hope you saw the great story about Rick and Sonny in today's Advertiser.

This one will be GREAT....DON'T MISS IT!

Rick Bragg!

The Capitol Book Newsletter
Friday, October 23, 2009

Rick Bragg next week! And then lots more after that!

One of our - and your - favorites will be here next week. Rick Bragg has written a new book, The Most They Ever Had, all about the life and times of the cotton mill in Jacksonville, Alabama, and the people it nurtured....and exploited. If you want to see a little video snippet of Rick talking about the book, CLICK HERE. ($23 hardcover)

If you want a whole lot more of Rick, come to FLOWERS HALL AT HUNTINGDON COLLEGE NEXT THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 AT 7 PM.

But that's not all......
Along with Rick that night will be his buddy - and another one of your favorites....Sonny Brewer of Fairhope, whose new book The Widow and the Tree is loosely based on the real-life events surrounding the intentional killing of "Inspiration Oak," a landmark Live Oak tree near Magnolia Springs. ($23 hardcover)

But that's not all......
We've got about 5 or 6 other major events planned over the next few weeks.....including Lisa Patton, Brooke and Keith Desserich, Charlie Lucas (the Tin Man), Justin Allen, Anne Byrne (The Cake Doctor), John Besh (My New Orleans: The Cookbook), Kirk Curnutt, and Chris and Idie Hastings (The Hot and Hot Fish Club Cookbook).
We'll let you know details of all these as the time approaches, but for right now all these events are posted on our web site...so for particulars you can go there. You need only CLICK HERE to do that.

And to reserve signed copies of any of these books, just CLICK HERE...or call us at 334-265-1473.

Book Club Recommendations

On September 29, 2009 two Random House representatives came to the store to suggest books for local Book Clubs. Here's the video of Random House's Toni Hetzel talking about the book The Fireman's Wife by Jack Riggs. Click on the link to see the list of all the books they discussed that night.

Advice from someone other than us

The Capitol Book Newsletter
Thursday, September 24, 2009

To whom are these people listening?

The answer is....they're sitting right here in our bookstore, listening to Toni Hetzel of Random House, one of the world's largest and most diverse publishers, as she talks (about a year ago) about her very favorite book recommendations. These folks got great ideas for books to read themselves, and for their Book Clubs, and for the best books to give for Christmas gifts.
That meeting was so popular that many of these folks demanded we do it again, so we are....only this time we'll have two of Random House's top representatives here. Toni's back by popular demand, and this year Hillary Compton, who travels the Southeast for Random House, will be here, too. It'll be twice as nice!
So come. Bring a friend. Bring your whole Book Club. It's a blast, and it doesn't even last that long. Wine and cheese at 5 PM, two Book Talks at 6 PM, you'll be home by 7 PM, and if you're lucky you'll take one of our Door Prizes home with you!
It all happens THIS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29. At 5 PM.
No Reservation required....just COME!
